Teaching overseas can be really fun as well as a financially sound plan. Did you know you can make US$ 20, $30, and even $50 USD plus per hour teaching ESL abroad! No, this is not a sales letter or any kind of scam. I am telling you the truth. I should know. I own an ESL cram school in Asia and pay my teachers between $20 and $30 US dollars and hour. So these kinds of salaries are real.
Right now if you are thinking about getting an ESL job in Asia, the three countries with the best payouts would be are Korea, Japan and Taiwan. There is still some potential to earn well in Hong Kong as well. Since the return of Hong Kong to China, the amount of native English speakers has dwindled along with Hong Kong’s English ability. So Hong Kong is quickly becoming an ESL destination.
Since the economic slowdown or whatever you want to call it, things have slowed down in the rest of the world as well. But there are still plenty of ESL job opportunities. The biggest market without any surprise in Asia is, of course, China. The problem with China is the salary there is still pretty low.
But they are catching up. Like Korea, I have heard mixed results on teaching in China. Some love it, others hate it. It mainly depends where you live, the school you are working for and what you are used to living like back at home. If you are used to mom picking up after you in your fully furnished beautiful bedroom back home, you might want to check somewhere else other than China. Unless you are in one of the larger cities.
But then the trade off is nicer living conditions, but your expenses are high as well. Don’t think just because it is Asia things are cheap. Some things are, some definitely are not. It depends. My rent in Taipei, Taiwan is NT$18’000, or approximately $600 USD per month. I was living in Brooklyn before leaving for Taiwan. So my rent here is comparable. But my sister lives in WV and rented a whole house for that much money. All things are relative. Remember that.
But if you are looking to just experience Asia, or more specifically China, and don’t want to take money out of your pocket, then teaching English in China is a great idea. Just don’t try to save a lot of money while you are there. But of course if you are very frugal, you’re always able to save something.
And don’t forget about the other Asian countries I didn’t mention here. Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Turkey and India are all great places to live and teach and truly experience something different. Take a chance and discover a completely new way to experience life without spending a dime. Good Luck! And if you have any questions, please, just ask! I will help you as much as I can.
